Pharmaceutical compounds can often exist in salt form. These basic compounds can be difficult to separate on conventional C18 columns because they are a charged species. The Scherzo SW-C18 column contains a small amount of strong ionic ligands and C18 ligands, which enables it to recognize these salts and easily elute them. As shown in the link below, formic acid and ammonium formate are effective in resolving and eluting pharmaceutical compounds of similar structure.

Acetaminophen and its metabolite NAPQI are very similar in structure and can be difficult to resolve with a conventional C18 column. NAPQI is a toxic metabolite that can cause liver damage in those patients who take an overdose of acetaminophen.
Most other C18 columns (like Unison UK-C18) coelute acetaminophen and NAPQI, because they contain only reverse phase ligands.
The Scherzo family columns, Scherzo SS-C18, Scherzo SW-C18, and Scherzo SM-C18, have a unique blend of ionic and reverse phase ligands. The ionic ligands contained in the Scherzo family columns can recognize the slight polarity difference between acetaminophen and NAPQI and are able to separate them.
Due to the unique selectivity of the ionic ligands, the Scherzo family columns can also reverse the retention order as compared to a regulated silanol containing C18 column (Cadenza CL-C18).
